Training Funds Might Be Misdirected

Saturday, February 21, 2015

The least-experienced American workers are most often those who receive the least post-secondary job training from their places of business and academic institutions, according to a study recently released by Georgetown University. "Employer training tends to be for the most-experienced and most-educated employees," lead author Anthony Carnevale said in a statement explaining his group’s findings. The study revealed that of the $1.1 trillion spent on post-secondary education and training in the United States in 2013, employers allocated 86 percent to training budgets for “prime age” employees, or those between 25 and 54. Additionally, 58 percent went to train college-educated employees. Conversely, younger employees (college educated or not) under the age of 23 only received 3 percent of the total training budget in the United States, despite being the group requiring the most training assistance. Those over 55 received about 11 percent. Only 17 percent was allocated to train those with a high school education.
