Training Older Employees

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to employee training. Training modalities must be tailored to fit the various learning styles of employees, their personalities, and their life experiences. One element that is rarely considered in this equation, however, is age. Age is an important factor in the workforce but can be a touchy subject. Employers don’t want to be labeled as ageist, but it’s no secret that different considerations must be given to employees of different generations. Older employees have experienced a lot, and view work differently from their younger counterparts. This is why training must be different for older employees. Because they have already gone through the basics of participating in the workforce, they know what's expected of them on the job. A training program specifically designed for older individuals should respect their experience and knowledge in this regard. What’s more, training should reflect, enhance, and build on this wealth of experience. Just as Millennials want to know their purpose, elderly employees want to know that their background and career will be utilized and considered.
