Unconscious Bias Training Ineffective

Thursday, December 3, 2015

Many companies, including Google, AirBnB, and Pinterest, have adopted employee training programs meant to change unconscious biases in attempts to level the playing field for minorities and women. However, few of these programs have been successful. According to several experts, unconscious bias training does very little to actually change employee behavior. “Studies have shown that unconscious bias training doesn’t change behaviors,” said Laura Mather, the CEO and founder of Unitive, at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Next Gen conference. “It’s surprising considering how data driven Silicon Valley is.” The tech industry in particular has been criticized for hiring practices that leave women and minorities underrepresented. White and Asian males dominate the industry, while others are few and far between. In fact, Microsoft, Twitter, and Facebook have all been sued for discriminatory hiring practices. Vivienne Ming, the co-founder of education technology company Socos, said the solution is “a blend of data, training, and practice."
