Unemployability in India

Friday, October 30, 2015

In India, a lack of training is a major hindrance to the nation’s development. More than 90 percent of the country’s workforce is considered unskilled or semiskilled, and most workers have little to no formal training. Mahendra Singh Shekhawat works as a helper to a ceramic tile-setter, and makes six dollars a day. "I have never received any training; there is no one to guide us. We just see and learn while we are on the job," he says. "If I get some skills in civil construction, then I will start earning more, my work will be more stable and I will have a secure future—but we don't know who can help us.'' To combat the mounting problem, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched the Skill India Mission. The program seeks to provide skills training to 2.4 million young people in its first year with the goal of cutting down the youth unemployment rate, which currently stands at 12.9 percent. Ninad Karpe, chief executive of the IT training firm Aptech, says high unemployment rates and unemployability go hand in hand. "All of it cannot be solved at the same time, but if we have to look at one [issue], then unemployability can be tackled first.''
