Want to Boost Engagement? Avoid One-Size-Fits-All Training

As the workplace evolves and job functions become more robust, employees are coming to expect more from company-offered training programs. While the most important function of training is to teach an employee a new skill or competency, today’s workers are also looking for training programs to engage them, empower them, and help advance their careers. By designing programs that promote individual growth, employers demonstrate their investment in their employees and can bolster engagement and retention levels while boosting productivity and improving a business’s bottom line. The majority of companies offer some type of training, and employees have come to expect that their organizations will invest in their development. This is particularly true of Millennials, who tend to value personal development and learning opportunities more than their older counterparts. However, many companies make the mistake of designing “one-size-fits-all” training programs that aren’t necessarily relevant to the career path or personal goals of every employee. “Offering training just for the sake of offering training is a waste of everyone's time,” says Luis Ramirez, director of marketing for digital media at InterCall. “In addition to being relevant, training needs to be engaging or the information presented will not stick.”
