Want to Boost Engagement? Go Green.

Tuesday, December 13, 2016

The American worker no longer views a job as a means to an end, and collecting a paycheck every two weeks isn’t enough to keep a worker engaged. A person’s job is part of her identity and lifestyle, so many employees are taking company values and goals more seriously. Modern workers want to know that their work matters and that they are working for a company that is striving to make a difference. This is why many companies are working harder than ever to be more socially conscious, and sustainability efforts are becoming inextricably linked to employee engagement levels. Employees are more likely to report that they are engaged when working for an environmentally conscious organization, and the numbers back that notion up. About 72 percent of Americans report that they place a large emphasis on a CEO’s involvement in corporate responsibility when making major decisions, and 51 percent of Gen Y employees are concerned about their personal environmental impact and expect their employer to do the same. Nearly a quarter of American employees say their job is more fulfilling when they are given opportunities to make a positive impact on the world around them, and 70 percent say they would be more loyal to a company that allows them to contribute to issues they find important.
