What Can Leadership Learn From a Game Show?

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

American Ninja Warrior pits competitors against one another to make it through extremely challenging obstacle courses. The goal is to be one of the 15 finalists sent to Las Vegas to compete in the final round. There, each finalist will be given the opportunity to conquer a four-stage course that tests their strength and their will. What does this have to do with employee training? Everything. Top competitors don’t make it to the top by accident—it takes year-round training and the support of peers, coaches, family, and friends to become the best. Leadership should view training the same way. First, they should set a defined course for employees. Workers should know what skills and strengths they will need to be successful in overcoming obstacles in their professional career, and it is leadership's responsibility to provide the training they will need to be successful. Performance management paths should be created with this in mind. Additionally, leaders should help their employees focus on one obstacle at a time. Most workers are under immense pressure and are being asked to complete various tasks at the same time—it’s important that management acknowledges this, and encourages employees to focus on short-term goals, rather than being immobilized by the enormousness of the task at hand.
