Will AI Take Over Your Workplace Training?

Monday, May 1, 2017

When it comes to training, artificial intelligence (AI) might be more effective than human instructors. Bots are infinitely more patient and are willing to offer assistance and information as often as needed for as long as the trainee needs help. This might seem like a nightmare scenario, one in which relatable human instructors are replaced by annoying chatbots that create more hassle than they solve. However, this understanding of bots is outdated. A well-designed, well-implemented bot won’t bother anyone; it will empower them. Take the example of Jill Watson. A teaching assistant at Georgia Tech, Jill helped professors by answering students’ questions outside class and was loved by students and teachers alike. However, she wasn’t human; Jill was an advanced chatbot. In an interesting experiment, students were not told at the beginning of the semester that Jill was an AI program, but when the truth was revealed at the end of the semester, she was found to have passed the Turing Test (where humans cannot discern that they are interacting with artificial intelligence) with flying colors. Jill and AI like her have tremendous implications for the workplace, and for training as a whole.
