Women in Power More Likely to be Harassed

Sunday, July 3, 2016

A recent study has revealed the high price women pay for being ambitious: They are more likely to be the target of sexual harassment. “Despite being outlawed for over 25 years, sexual harassment in the workplace remains a serious concern,” the study by the University of Antwerp Research Group on Public Administration and Management found. “Women who occupy supervisory positions where they can lay claim to some organizational power does not mean that they embody the informal power required to prevent sexual harassment.” The study adds, “Contrapower harassment can be regarded as a means to counteract or equalize power differentials with woman supervisors. It reinforces the inferior gender status of women by negating their higher status within an organization.” The study revealed that about 3 percent of women in the workplace said they had been sexually harassed in the past 12 months. Of those, 26.8 percent reported the incident. However, in the preceding 12 months, 20 percent of women said they had been discriminated against in the workplace because of their gender, an increase from 17.4 percent in 2013. Of those, about 20 percent reported the issue.
