Workplace Safety Classes Becoming More Popular

Monday, April 18, 2016

As the number of mass shootings in the United States continues to rise, many organizations are emphasizing workplace safety training to protect their employees, should the unthinkable occur. "We never know who’s going to be walking through those front doors," says Cyd Fleckenstein, chef risk officer for Aventure Staffing. “We want our staff to be completely prepared for any type of situation that could arise and know what to do in that event." Recently the company trained employees on what to do should an active shooter walk through the door. Taught by a police officer, the training course helps employees protect themselves as well as others. The course, called S.A.V.E. Yourself, walks workers through how to flee, hide, or fight during an active shooter situation. This type of training is absolutely necessary in this day and age, says Chad Sheehan, one of the course’s instructors. “To say that [active shooter situations] are new is false,” he says. “Are they on the rise? I say absolutely.” And while workplace homicides have declined over the past decade, they still accounted for nearly one in 11 workplace deaths in 2014.
