Workplace Trends to Look for in 2018

Wednesday, November 1, 2017

As 2017 comes to an end, there is reason to be optimistic about the future. Buy all traditional indicators, the U.S. economy will continue to grow, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the unemployment rate will continue to decline, with an estimated 20.5 million new jobs created by 2020. However, these data tell us little about what our workplaces will look like in the future—both in the near and long term. According to experts, in the future, workplace leaders will be more likely to encourage more human interaction by designing workplaces and employee schedules that will facilitate interpersonal relationships. IBM recently did away with their remote-work program, bringing employees back to a more traditional type of office in order to facilitate cooperation and collaboration. Additionally, credentialing is going to become more important. As employees seek to set themselves apart from the crowd, individual skills will become more important than formal education. Employers will also likely place more of an emphasis on upskilling and retraining their current workers. Companies are having issues finding the right workers with the right skills at the right time, which has slowed economic growth for years. To prevent this, companies are going to start investing more heavily in their current workforces to close skills gaps from within.
