How Fortune 1000 Company EnerSys Builds a Global Learning Culture

EnerSys, Inc., an OpenSesame customer headquartered in Reading, Pennsylvania, is number 858 on the Fortune 1000 list of companies and employs more than 9,500 people in 36 countries worldwide. With a deep history of 100+ years in battery and power manufacturing, EnerSys faced a steep climb to transform its disparate “pockets” of training into a truly global learning culture.

In a recent OpenSesame webinar, “How to transform your organization into a truly global learning culture,” Drew Krajewski, director of Global Training and Development, presented how EnerSys leverages their integration between their learning management system (LMS) and e-learning courses from OpenSesame to take its training program global as well as develop leadership and high-potential employees on a worldwide scale with limited resources and a lean L&D team.

EnerSys leveraged their SAP SuccessFactors LMS to standardize worldwide training. Through the OpenSesame partnership, they were able to instantly fill their LMS with its own curated course selection for employees all at once, rather than building a library in-house over time. Enersys Academy provides a central location where employees in every country can access e-learning courses, their career development training paths, required compliance training, and more in their own language, time, and format.

Driving greater adoption of e-learning helps EnerSys extract greater value from its e-learning courses. The more courses that are taken, the less it costs per course. Currently EnerSys spends $30 per course, but expects to reduce the cost to the single digits through increased employee adoption of training.

Krajewski also shared their success with a new optional training curriculum created for different levels of managers at the organization. Managers can complete courses such as Introduction to Management, Managing Up, Leading Effective Teams and Motivation and Engagement. Managers that opt to participate have a specific timeframe to complete a specific set of curated courses in categories such as performance evaluations, goal setting, influencing others, and effective meetings; 43% of EnerSys managers completed at least one of the curated curriculums within the specified timeframe.

Mobile access to training was also a big need for EnerSys, as many employees in the field don’t have access to a computer or their access is limited to outdated and slow kiosks. EnerSys employees are now using Microsoft Surface tablets at various locations, to take courses on the SuccessFactors mobile application anywhere, any time.
