I am looking for a way to ask my learners to self-assess how comfortable ( I do not like this word !) they were with the content prior to the training and then how they would rank themselves after?

perhaps some of the discomfort stems from the feeling that "comfort" is a subjective work and we're asking learners to evaluate themselves. asking learners to rate their current performance in specific areas might feel less subjective. "competence" also suggests performance.

"Confidence" is a good word as suggested by Rachel. You can also use "Competence". This is useful especially when the learners are taught a new skill or habit.
