Best Practices for New Hire Experience

Published: Friday, January 22, 2021

Hello TD colleagues!

I am looking for any advice you would be willing  to share regarding your position and experience with onboarding new hires with your organization. This is something I am focused on assessing for my organization this year and would love to connect with anyone that is willing to share their own experiences or expertise. To help drive discussion, I have a few questions I would like to ask you if you are willing to share. I figured this discussion board might be a great resource to any of us that are working in this area.

Thank you in advance!

Over the years I have worked on Orientation in multiple organizations, but I will answer your questions from the perspective of where I am now--
1. Do you work mostly for the exempt or non exempt population?-- Slightly more non-exempt, but the Orientation is designed for both.
2. What is your employee population like – do you have non-native English speakers? We support 41 different languages.
Keith - Thank you very much!

5. Is retention an issue for you – what are the challenges to retaining employees?-- Retention is a goal for us. We are above industry standard, but would like those number to be even higher.
6. How do you measure return on investment for onboarding training?-- We have used evaluation sheets and retention as barometers of success, and we are looking at other measurements.
7. What things work really well for you when it comes to onboarding new employees?-- Getting new hires involved

3. What does your onboarding process look like – is it the same for exempt and non-exempt?-- This is a big question. Simplified, training completes a 1 day Organizational Orientation and the departments are responsible for a job specific onboarding. This is the same for salaried and non-salaried.
4. What are the biggest challenges that you have found as it related to onboarding new employees?-- Making sure it is engaging & overcoming the negative image from earlier jobs they held.
