"Hey Karin, it's my first time at the ATD conference, and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. How do I make the most of this conference experience?" #AskingforFriend

Tips for a Great ATD  Conference Experience

As a learning and development professional, I bet you've uttered these words more than you'd care to imagine. "What you get out of this investment is directly correlated to what you put in. So what should you put in? How do you make the most of your ATD conference experience? After all, it's a huge conference brimming with opportunity, which is awesome, and overwhelming at the same time.

Well, you've been following our research on courage and innovation, you know about the powerful combination of clarity and curiosity.  If you want great ideas, you need to be clear about what you're looking for and then show up curious and open to possibilities.

1. Set clear goals

Determine what you want to achieve from the conference. Do you want to gain specific knowledge, network with industry professionals, or explore new trends? Setting clear goals will help you stay focused and make better choices during the conference.

If you have multiple goals, you might want to prioritize them or pick a day to focus on each goal.

For example, here are a few of mine.

I'm delivering two programs, so my most important priority is making those sessions high ROI for those who attend, by sharing practical, actionable tools and techniques, and facilitating powerful, courageous conversations.

I also have a serious priority to see colleagues and old friends. Many of my fellow leadership and workplace culture friends are going to be there, as well as several clients and strategic partners. It will be a joy to connect in person.

And of course, I'm curious about the latest trends and best practices.  One goal is to come back smarter in a few key areas.

2. Make a plan

Create a personalized schedule to ensure you make the most of your time at the conference. In my case, I've made connecting with people a clear priority, and have set up times to meet with old friends and colleagues for meals. I've also made a deliberate plan for the vendors I'd like to chat with at the expo.

3. Stay open and curious

Approach the conference with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Engage in sessions and workshops actively, take notes, and ask questions. Be receptive to new ideas and perspectives, and be prepared to challenge your existing knowledge.

When I spoke at ATD last year, I was delighted by all the spontaneous learning and conversations.

4. Network strategically and serendipitously

Take advantage of the networking opportunities at the conference. Connect with other attendees, speakers, and exhibitors who share similar interests. Attend social events, join discussion groups, and participate in networking activities. Exchange contact information and follow up with new connections after the conference.

5. Utilize social media #ATD23

Join the conference conversation on social media platforms using the official event hashtag. Share your insights, connect with other attendees, and participate in discussions. Social media can enhance your networking experience and help you stay updated on conference activities. Get creative and have some fun.

6. Take a timeout

There's so much to learn and so many people to talk with, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Not that you're going to need any more steps, after navigating the conference center for three days, but taking a walk can be a great way to process what you've learned. Or grab a coffee and sit quietly with your notes to process how you might apply while it's fresh.

7. Reflect, Apply, and Follow-Up

Once the conference is over, take the time to reflect on your experience. Identify key takeaways and action items. Consider how you can apply what you've learned to your professional practice and set goals for implementing new strategies or approaches. It's so easy to let the connections you've made at ATD fade away. Follow up with people you've met with personal notes or LinkedIn messages.

Remember, the success of your conference experience largely depends on your active participation and engagement. By planning, networking, and being open to learning, you can maximize the value you gain from attending an ATD conference
