Fried Training Talk- A Passion For Designing With Inclusion In Mind

Published: Friday, February 26, 2021

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST WAY TO TRAIN PEOPLE TO BE MORE EQUITABLE & INCLUSIVE?

Big question for you all this Friday.

Many of you have seen me post about my passion for Diversity & Inclusion on here in the past. Even behind required face coverings people see my blue eyes peering out of a white middle class male face & my intensity on the issue confuses them.

From looking at me, it’s hard to see I grew up in a mixed race/ethnicity family, in a minority dominated neighborhood. From my expanding waistline it’s hard for some to imagine I used to play playground basketball & street football games where my friends joked I was the “white spot” on the court/street.

A colleague recently said to me it’s a shame we need to do diversity trainings, “Generally people just sit there, and don’t get anything out of it.”

I believe every learning designer wants every course they create to make a difference for those taking it. Whether it is making a job process easier or something as life-critical as accepting, acknowledging, & celebrating diversity.

Right now, I am working on a Bias game with a group of really smart people, but I wonder if this is the best approach to sharing ideas about diversity?

How would you get people to see that our differences strengthen us, & our humanity should bind us?

Tell me more about the goal of the bias game.
Courtney, the basic goal of the game is for the players to have a gamified task they have to do that after they do it they will be able to self identify where they used bias to make a decision. Mohsin Memon is heading the project.
