Fried Training Talk- Favorite Training Tools (Toys)

My department recently purchased “fake money” for people to practice with while training on a new function, and at a time where many places across the world are thinking about budgets it got me to thinking about the best training tools I’ve used or seen used in the past. One of my favorites was a solid dark wood puzzle box about 1’ by 1’ where the training activity was to determine what was inside the box. The box did not cost too much, but generated hours of effective training. Another tool was a set of “adult tinker toys” with multiple training functions. Tools like those added a lot to the training experience without breaking the budget.

So I thought I’d put the question out there what are your favorite training tools (training toys?) ever.

By the way, I'm really enjoying the Fried Training Talks and the opportunity to enter into discussions about the topics presented! Thanks for posting these!
Thanks, I am glad you are enjoying these. It is something I did for several years in a couple other forums and am really happy to be back doing.

I would take a new employee orientation group out to the park on their last day. I'd find 2 trees about 15' apart and would create a "Spider's Web" out of twine. The idea of the exercise is to pass everyone through the holes created in the web without touching the twine or using the same opening. We'd debrief and discuss the importance of team work and how any sized group that truly worked together could accomplish almost anything. Cost? The price of the ball of twine!
Frank- The Spider's Web activity sounds great, did you ever use the twine for any other activities?

I found that not only was it an entertaining exercise for the students that broke the routine of "sit in lecture, take a quiz, hope for the best" (at that time the typical EMS training class), but rallying around Vader built camaraderie and gave the class a sense of purpose outside of themselves.
Shane- I really enjoy the concept of the class "rallying around Vader", have you ever used him in any trainings other than that EMS training?
