Best Practice in Delivering New Software Training?

Duirng a recent multi-hospital new system implementation training, I sat through 5 days of new software training.  The training format was prep work of viewing several brief e-learnings, followed by classroom (8am-5pm with several breaks). Instruction  was either "see one, do one" or "follow me" through the various activities.  The "follow me" format of instructor explaining, clicking with the class following along was done to save time (there is a very tight time frame to cover all of the material).  Practice with a training guide was expected outside of the classroom and instructors were readily available by email. 

The educator in me couldn't help but wonder what best practice is for training/learning new software?

Hey Taffy! I like the "seven different times, seven different ways" mentality. Done rollouts where we created job aids, had online micro-learning, ILT both in class an virtual, and even pre-tests where people could test out of training if they scored well enough.
Working on a project right now where the time to go-live is extended. So we have classes, and then practice sessions every three weeks where folks can come back in and work a task to refresh their knowledge.
Lots of options!
Thanks Garth for your feedback. I particularly like the spaced practice session format. The go-live date is set and we have approx. 1,000 people to train on various applications before that, so it will be a challenge to set up practice sessions for all of the applications! Job aids are avail. as well.

Hi Taffy - Hopefully the classroom time included some deliberate discussion/reflection of why the newer system was necessary, i.e. more efficient or effective, for automation or consistency, for better service delivery, etc. Some reflection/ discussion among learners on how the new systems was comparable to the old one or the old practice. Was the old way still available in the workplace after the training? That would help to thwart the intended effect of the training.

By joining a multi-hospital system, there was no choice with the system, although, the chosen system is working well for the others and we are excited to become integrated. The old systems will be view only after go-live. My interest is finding the best practice format for training on new software. Thanks again.
