Pencil Whipping Training Verification

TS
Published: Monday, March 23, 2020

Hi all. I suspect there may be some pencil-whipping of training going on in our organization. It may have been historical or not. The evidence is in that experienced folks don't always seem to know what they should even after some years of experience. Given that there's a need to use our supervisors and others to do site field training - they're the experts after all - I'm wondering how to break that cycle. Any advice?

Thanks!

HI - great post! The phrase pencil whipping caught my attention. Are you in the life sciences space? Perhaps in MFG or OPS or a QC lab? My qualified trainers (QTs) use that term to describe just signing the OJT checklist without performing any tasks or demonstrations. It undermines our entire qualification program and the integrity of our QTs. Second concept - grandfathering seasoned emps. Not acceptable in my industry. All trainers have to be qualified to teach and qualify others. V-

Use the Change Management theory, it's a great resource. Your more seasoned employees were likely trained to be task focused and may not know why or how what they do affects company mission or objectives. This is easy to triage by simply asking them. Also, to develop and deliver the training, use your SME's who are on the actually doing the work. Supervisors aren't always doing the work and by having their peers/SME's do the training, will likely have more buy-in. Reach out if have questions
