When can you use mobile augmented reality to improve job performance?

Published: Sunday, April 10, 2022

Mobile augmented reality (AR) technologies can be integrated seamlessly into the workflow and allow workers to move freely to perform tasks. Mobile AR is beneficial to enhance productivity, reduce error, improve processes, and assist decision-making. However, mobile AR cannot be used in all situation to  address performance issues. Two emperical research reported that using AR for simple and repetitive tasks reduced workers' speed and  reduced the satisfaction of using the AR tool  (Abate et al., 2017; Liu et al., 2012). Therefore, it is necessary to  determine the work settings to better adopt mobile AR  to assist job performance.

First of all,  mobile AR is used as a job aid and it follows similar applicable and non-applicable conditions as other performance support tools. A table is illustrated in the article,  Use Mobile Augmented Reality to Support Job Performance, for detailed conditions.

Secondly, mobile AR has special requirements in the physical job environment to  reduce the distractions for optimum performance (Rummler & Brache, 1995; Van Tiem et al., 2012). In the field, factors such as sound, light, internet connection, or clothing could limit mobile devices' use.

Therefore,  the job conditions should be carefuly examined to decide how to adopt mobile AR.  Futher reserach will help to answe the question.

Thanks, Yao. Great post. I think it's important that you touched on both the job-aid aspect and the physical job environment. As a designer, it's easy to get caught up on the content and product, forgetting to consider the importance of setting (i.e., when and where will they access the training).
