Combining Story and Game: A New Take on Applied Learning

The traditional lecture-based approach to training is often dry, passive, and disengaging. Great story can help make an experience more memorable, but stories can also be too passive. By combining story and game, designers can create a memorable and applied learning experience that can increase knowledge retention. As a designer, you will learn how to use story and game to create transformative learning experiences. The session will use real-world examples, demonstrating a range of experiences---from simple scenarios to more elaborate stories that follow a 'learning by doing' approach. You will learn how to use the story arc model to create multipath, story-driven learning games and simulations. This session will focus on how story and game together can provide higher levels of engagement and application, creating more memorable learning experiences.
