A performance consultant uses a systematic approach to find the root causes of performance gaps, then recommends and implements solutions to address those gaps. This advanced course gives you everything you need to master a performance consulting approach in your work and make a bigger impact in your organization.

Whether you hold the formal title of performance consultant or not, the skills you learn and hone in this course will elevate your ability by giving you a systematic and reliable approach you can use on the job to address performance issues. You will have the opportunity to assess your capabilities against key performance consulting competency areas and roles to determine your strengths and development opportunities.

ATD has been a leader in human performance improvement (HPI) for more than 20 years, and ATD’s Performance Consulting Model and the ATD Performance Consulting Framework are the foundation of this course. During this eight-week blended program, you’ll get practical experience applying each phase of the performance consulting model using real-life client scenarios. You’ll leave this program with the ability to deliver results to your clients and with the confidence to call yourself a master performance consultant.

What You Will Learn
  • Assess current strengths in key performance consulting competency areas and roles (e.g., expert, advisor, coach, facilitator, and more) and identify opportunities for ongoing improvement.
  • Apply ATD’s Performance Consulting Framework (e.g., ethical guidelines, critical skills, consulting competency areas, process, methodology, tools, relationship management, and specializations ) to enhance your ability to improve clients’ individual, team, or organizational performance.
  • Establish and manage a trusting relationship with the client and key stakeholders during an engagement and beyond.
  • Use the Performance DNA Methodology and tools to gain client alignment and commitment, capture goals and performance gaps, identify key performers, analyze human performance, recognize positive and negative influences on performance, and document findings.
  • Use effective HPI data analysis, consolidation, and decision-making methods to derive defensible workplace performance findings, reveal trends and patterns of key performance, and make recommendations.

Program Components
Over eight weeks, you will interact with your peers and facilitator on your own time. During the course, you’ll master the process of performance consulting by using theory and practical techniques to analyze a case study and develop a final project. You’ll collaborate with peers each week and receive guidance and feedback from an expert facilitator.
Week 1 (Self-Paced and Live Online): The Fundamentals of Performance Consulting
Get to know your peers and become familiar with the course structure. You will discuss the role of a performance consultant, review key concepts related to HPI, and receive an introduction to ATD's Performance Consulting Model and Performance Consulting Framework. You’ll review the case study and select a topic for your final project.

During this week, you’ll spend approximately two and a half flexible hours online, on the days and times of your choosing. You’ll also attend a 90-minute facilitator-led live online session.
Week 2 (Self-Paced): Assessing the Need
Get started with the first phase of the ATD Performance Consulting Model: Assess the Need. Key topics for the week include assessing business needs, gaining client alignment and commitment, building client relationships, and starting up a project. You’ll submit your first deliverable for your final project by the end of the week.

During this week, you’ll spend approximately two and a half flexible hours online, on the days and times of your choosing.
Week 3 (Self-Paced and Live Online): Understanding the Issue
Work through the second phase of ATD’s Performance Consulting Model: Understand the Issue, which will help you identify and interview key performers and define outcomes. You’ll apply the first two steps of the Performance Consulting Framework when analyzing the case study and preparing for your final project.

During this week, you’ll spend approximately two and a half flexible hours online on the days and times of your choosing. You will also attend a 90-minute facilitator-led live online session.
Week 4 (Self-Paced): Analyzing the Data
Continue working in the second phase of the Model, Understand the Issue. Important topics include reviewing performance gaps, analyzing key work processes, defining tasks, interviewing for key work processes, and conducting structured observations.

By the end of the week, you’ll submit the second deliverable of your final project.

During this week, you’ll spend approximately two and a half flexible hours online, on the days and times of your choosing.
Week 5 (Self-Paced and Live Online): Presenting the Findings and Interpretation
Focus on the third phase of the model: Present Findings and Interpretation. Discuss how to review data and formulate a hypothesis based on your findings, test your hypothesis, consolidate and refine your data set, select and prioritize solutions, and confirm an influence hypothesis.

During this week, you’ll spend approximately two flexible hours online, on the days and times of your choosing. You’ll also attend a 90-minute facilitator-led live online session.
Week 6 (Self-Paced): Developing and Implementing a Solution
Focus on the fourth phase of the model: Develop and Implement a Solution. Topics this week include presenting findings and interpretations, delivering the final report, developing and implementing results-based solutions, dealing with resistance, and improving impact through change management.

You’ll submit the third deliverable of your final project by the end of Week 6.

During this week, you’ll spend approximately two and a half flexible hours online, on the days and times of your choosing.
Week 7 (Self-Paced and Live Online): Completing the Project and Evaluating the Results
The final step of the model is to complete and present your project and evaluate the results. Key topics for the week include improving impact through evaluation and influencing change.

During this week, you’ll spend approximately two flexible hours online, on the days and times of your choosing. You’ll also attend a 90-minute facilitator-led live online session.
Week 8 (Self-Paced): Putting It All Together
During the final week of the course, reflect on your learning and demonstrate your expertise in all aspects of performance consulting by submitting the final two deliverables of your performance consulting project.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The ATD Master Performance Consultant program is designed primarily for experienced learning, talent, and organization development practitioners ready to elevate and validate their skills in performance improvement and consulting. Internal and external business consultants who lead transformation and change initiatives in organizations will find this program especially beneficial.

To ensure you gain the most from this advanced program, you must have:

  • At least three years of experience in the consulting profession.
  • A solid understanding of and experience in applying consulting principles and processes.
  • A strong background in traditional consulting tasks, such as conducting needs assessments, understanding the issue, analyzing available data, presenting findings, and developing and implementing solutions.

Additionally, completion of a foundational ATD certificate program such as the Consulting Skills Certificate, Human Performance Improvement Certificate, or Change Management Certificate is preferred (not required).

Things to Know

COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

ATD Master® Programs are blended learning experiences that take place over multiple weeks. Participation in all originally scheduled days of the program, including both face-to-face and online program components (if applicable), and all coursework is mandatory to earn the ATD Master designation and continuing education credits.

Face-to-Face Program Components (if applicable):
No more than two hours of the entire face-to-face program can be missed.

Live Online Program Components (if applicable):
ATD requires active participation throughout the program to receive credit. Active participation in live online sessions includes, but is not limited to, participating in virtual classroom activities, discussions, breakout sessions, and intersession work.

Make-up policy: You can miss and make up one session* by listening to a session recording. Instructions for reporting make-up sessions are posted on ATD’s learning platform.

*For full-day sessions, you can only miss up to 3.5 hours and make up the time by listening to the recording.

Asynchronous Program Components: New content will be made available on ATD’s learning platform each week. All activities, assessments, and project work must be completed the week they are assigned.

This program is eligible for 28.0 professional development hours or recertification points from the ATD Certification Institute (ATD CI) for the APTD or CPTD credential. New! Earning the ATD Master Instructional Designer® designation fulfills the entire professional development requirement toward the APTD or CPTD Certification. See ATD CI eligibility criteria for details.

This program has been approved for 28.0 (General) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR, and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

This program is valid for 28.0 PDCs for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. For more information about certification or recertification, please visit shrm.org/certification.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

A laptop computer with Wi-Fi capability is required to participate in ATD Programs.

Face-to-Face Program Components (if applicable):
Please do not bring mobile devices (for example, phones or tablets) instead of a laptop. There will be no computers available on-site for participants. Note: You might not have an optimal experience using Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge to access your courses. Chrome is the recommended browser.

Live Online Program Components (if applicable):
You must log in to the learning platform to access course content and to join all live online sessions. Special software is not required. You only need a standard web browser and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capability to participate. Please join your session from a location with a strong internet connection and plan to use VoIP for your audio during the entire session.
