All of my coaching clients are required to use a private, online journal for the purpose of submitting an entry every day for the duration of our coaching period. The goal is for them to use the journal to truly understand their values, their beliefs, their perspectives on the world, and their patterns of thinking. This insight enables me to help them reflect on their lives and make slight changes that result in transformational outcomes, creating an unparalleled journey for the client.

Here’s how it works: I give clients journaling prompts, they journal, and then I provide comments that enable the conversation and exploration to continue.

This is an excerpt from a journal that was written by one of my clients about five weeks into our coaching experience.

”Despite all that is going on at work, I am pleased with my progress and learning during the past few weeks, but as we talked about today, I need to focus on allowing the tough moments to pass during those few days every month. The good news is that it they are extremely predictable and, like clockwork, dissipate. Anyway, I am going to face tomorrow, and this week in general, with strength and courage and know that no matter what, I can handle it. This is stage one.

Stage two is embracing and looking forward to things that once scared me and that I always have tried to avoid. But that will take time. So for now, I am going to drown my sorrows in a pint of gelato.”
