Fried Training Talk-- Orientation Overload

Off and on for more years than I'd like to admit I have posted something called Fried Training Talk mostly on the ATD Instructional Design Network (on Ning). Recently someone suggested that I should add it here. This is intended to start conversations between Training Professionals on some of the issues many of us encounter while designing and delivering training.

Almost every company with more than 5 people in it has some kind of New Hire Orientation. I’ve been responsible for elements of multiple Orientations (from a 2 hour to a 6 week orientation) over the years and it always seems like we “dump” so much information into these fresh trainees that it can’t be effective. I believe that by clearly articulating the goals of Orientation Training and creating interactive/engaging trainings the cognitive overload can be minimized, but I have never seen it completely eliminated from any Orientation.

Anyone have any ideas, hints, suggestions, or sage wisdom to impart on this?

First, involve the trainees in the learning including having them review content and teaching each other. Include the use of their cell phones with either an on-line game they can play or use a QRC to take them somewhere interesting. Really fun is if your organization invests in a NHO Game board where the trainees are rolling dice and answering questions about the Company values, mission etc. Create a theme around the Company and play off of those cues to make it interesting and fun!
Julie, I agree with everything you say. Keeping them engaged and as much as we hate to say the word "entertained" is a large part of the battle. I love utilizing teach back techniques too. What I'm not sure of is if this approach completely solves the issue of too much too fast, or if it just makes it so the trainees are just happier when they don't remember all the information later.
