Off and on for more years than I'd like to admit I have posted something called Fried Training Talk mostly on the ATD Instructional Design Network (on Ning). Recently someone suggested that I should add it here. This is intended to start conversations between Training Professionals on some of the issues many of us encounter while designing and delivering training.
Almost every company with more than 5 people in it has some kind of New Hire Orientation. I’ve been responsible for elements of multiple Orientations (from a 2 hour to a 6 week orientation) over the years and it always seems like we “dump” so much information into these fresh trainees that it can’t be effective. I believe that by clearly articulating the goals of Orientation Training and creating interactive/engaging trainings the cognitive overload can be minimized, but I have never seen it completely eliminated from any Orientation.
Anyone have any ideas, hints, suggestions, or sage wisdom to impart on this?
