The Appeal of Public Service

In his inaugural address on January 20, 1961, President John F. Kennedy passionately

called on the country to ask not what your country can do for you;

ask what you can do for your country. His call was answered by hundreds of

thousands of young people in the 1960s and 1970s.They took jobs in Congress,

joined the Peace Corps, and entered the expanding federal workforce.
