Who are the more than 5,000 talent development professionals who have earned the APTD or CPTD credential? Get to know the talented and diverse community:

Shelly Reed is a Systems Training Manager in the US. She earned the Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD®) credential in 2023.

Why did you pursue the APTD?
I have been working in talent development for more than a decade and wanted to pursue the APTD certification to enhance my knowledge and skill set as a professional training specialist. I also wanted to achieve it ahead of my next promotion, and this was a great opportunity for professional development toward that.

How have you benefited from the credential—professionally and/or personally?
I have learned so much over the past year that I was able to apply on the job, so it really enhanced my work. Outside of work, it’s encouraged me to grow my professional network of talent developers, and I now sit on the 2024 board of directors for the ATD Nashville chapter as VP of conferences!

What advice would you share with others considering certification?.
I would say definitely go for it! The learning is so valuable and influential to you and your organization, and the result is something you can really be proud of. It legitimizes you being a professional in the talent development field, especially if talent development is not something you studied or majored in.

How do you think certification helps the talent development field?
Certification really helps to build a great network of talent developers with their own unique perspectives, skills, and contributions. The more minds sharing ideas, the better!

How did your employer support your pursuit of the credential?
My boss encouraged me to apply for the credential to support my professional development this year. My employer was fully in support of my pursuit of the credential and paid for the certification fees.

What does having your credential mean to you?
To me, having the APTD credential is proof of all of the hard work I have done over the past year in growing my knowledge and skill set in the talent development field.
