Develop Your People Skills

All the talk these days is about AI and what it can do. Things are moving quickly, and I am certain that in 2026, AI will do even more work than we could imagine. But I’m also confident that people will still have a place in the business world and that humans want to work with other humans. And therefore, human skills become even more valuable (possibly the most valuable) in an age of AI.

In our book, Own Your Brand, Own Your Career , Mike and I dedicate an entire chapter to what we call the seven deeply human traits that will matter even more in the age of AI. These are the qualities that no algorithm can replicate. They are the traits that build trust , drive collaboration, spark creativity, and create real connections. These are the skills that shape your reputation just as much as your technical expertise, and in many cases, even more.

As AI takes on more transactional, analytical, and repetitive work, your value will increasingly come from how you think, how you relate to others, how you lead, and how you show up in moments that require judgment, empathy , communication , and courage. People will remember how you made them feel long after they forget the dashboard you built or the system you implemented.

Human skills show up in simple, everyday moments. It is how well you listen in meetings, rather than waiting for your turn to talk. It is how you handle conflict when tension is high. It is whether people feel safe bringing you ideas or concerns. It is your ability to motivate others when things feel uncertain . It is how you respond when a project goes sideways or a teammate is struggling. And it definitely explains why my clients continue to hire me to speak in their organizations, even though they could probably just recommend everyone read an email or watch a YouTube video.

Trust and relationships continue to drive decision-making, and if anything, they will become even more important because people will sift through AI content to find the human parts they can relate to and connect with. And as more routine work becomes commoditized, the ability to make tough calls, communicate effectively, and read between the lines will also gain new value.

Therefore, you need to think about how you are developing your ability to interact with and work with other humans. This includes traits like emotional intelligence or EQ , judgement, and critical thinking, storytelling (or effective communication), collaboration and inclusion , adaptability , resilience , and discernment or taste.

Your personal brand is not built solely on what you know. It is built on how you treat people, how you collaborate, how you communicate, and how you lead when things are uncomfortable. In a world increasingly mediated by technology, these very human behaviors become your greatest differentiator.

It’s important to think about how you are showing up and collaborating with others. If empathy does not come naturally to you, then perhaps you can look into developing that skill, just as a more people-oriented person would develop their understanding of technology. Same for judgment and critical thinking. Some say AI is degrading our ability to think critically, therefore those who continue to develop this skill and use it well, will likely stand out and be more valuable in the workplace.

If you want to future-proof your career and strengthen your personal brand going into 2026, start investing intentionally in the human side of your development. Pay attention to how you listen. How you handle pressure. How you support others. How you flex your communication style. These are the traits that create influence without authority and opportunity without waiting.

Become an AI Master

AI is going to be the most dominant business trend of 2026, and AI mastery is quickly becoming one of the most valuable skills in the workplace. As I have discussions with human resources and talent development leaders , I’m often hearing them tell me their company’s leadership has announced that AI fluency or AI adoption is now the highest priority, and everything else is on hold.

Many companies and their executive teams are feeling pressure to get their employees to use AI more to increase efficiency and productivity, improve innovation, and remain relevant for the future. And no matter what role you work in, you have an opportunity to stand out and add value to the organization by embracing AI and learning as much as you can so that you can become an AI master.

As I stated before, I still believe that as technology does more, human skills will be the most valuable in the future. But until we get to a place where AI does everything, having humans who can master AI and figure out the best places to leverage it to improve efficiency and productivity, will be more and more valuable.

Those who embrace and adopt AI , trying many different tools and suggesting ways to improve processes and efficiency, will stand out in a world where many people are still afraid of and avoiding AI. This is a great way to build a personal brand as someone who is curious, innovative, and who can help the organization leverage AI more in the future.

To that end, I have been reading and listening to a lot about AI and trying different tools, and I’ve even considered taking online courses and getting an online certification , even though my job title (author and keynote speaker) is not one you might expect would be heavily affected by AI. But there are always ways we can grow and improve, and I don’t want to be left behind. I want my clients to know that I’m on the cutting edge of technology and ready to use the tools that will help us both accomplish more.

You have an opportunity to do that as well. As you are asking yourself what you want to be known for, why not add “AI Master” to the list and then start taking steps to become recognized as one. I’ll be doing the same.
