The "Tutor," the original e-learning delivery mechanism, appeared in the May 1960 Training Directors Journal. The Tutor, capable of teaching any subject which can be treated on the printed page or in motion pictures, controls the learning process while allowing each student to proceed at his own pace.
Back in the 1960s, the author of the article--Norman A. Crowder--wrote that "the most common question asked about the Tutor is whether it is expected to replace the human instuctor." The designers felt it would not.
Think about technology and how that has changed the way learning is delivered. E-learning has not taken the place of instructor-led classroom training--rather, it is used to supplement the learning that takes place in the classroom.
