So, you want to make a difference in the world?  More specifically, do you want a career that “makes a difference”? For increasing numbers of young people, their search for meaningful work leads them to the public sector.  This work might involve contributing to the life of a local community by working in city/county municipalities, public safety, the military or with state or federal government.

Long after a new public sector employee has cleared the often complex world of public sector hiring, he or she is then faced with decisions about how to advance in one’s career.  Career development matters in the public sector in the same way that it does in the private; the rules may simply be a bit less clear.

Some of the traditional career development paths involve informal relationships like mentoring or networking within affinity groups.  Another option is through public/private partnerships that match rising young public sector workers with industry mentors, such as The American Council for Technology (ACT) - Industry Advisory Council (IAC), or ACT-IAC.  ACT-IAC was formed with the express purpose of providing a forum for collaboration across and beyond government with leading industry and government figures by focusing on public sector management issues and how to improve those processes.  ACT-IAC provides a crucial, often-missing element of a formalized leadership development and collaboration process.

To find out more about ACT-IAC, please join us for the webcast on Fostering Career Growth of Young Professionals in the Government Community Through Collaboration.
