Digital Interviews, Pt. 2: Quick Tips for Video Interviews
Loading...

The digital age is upon us, there is no escape, we need to adapt to what the market place is telling us must do…digital interviews. Last time, we focused on the telephone interview.

In this post, I’ll give you tips for handing digital or video interviews, which can be cheap, fast, and easy. Nothing will ever take the place of a face-to-face interview, but digital interviews are the closest thing to the real thing, if performed correctly.

Here’s some quick advice on what you’ll need to make an emotional connection in the digital world to get a great job anywhere in the world.

A good digital handshake. A good “digital handshake” entails a slight shoulder bend, eyes forward, and a slow, confident, professional, and firm nod.

Software. Make software your friend. It doesn’t matter if it is SKYPE, Google Hang-out, Go- To- Meeting. Know how to use it and use it well.

Camera. Get a good webcam camera so you can look great. With a name brand, HD Web Camera, you will be fine.

Audio. You need to sound as great as you look. Get a high quality microphone. One example is the Snowball, made by Blue. It is an outstanding product made specifically for interviewing. A good microphone will help you sound fantastic.

Light. There needs to be the right kind of light. Soft natural lighting is the way to go, because it creates an inviting environment.

Background. No one wants to see what’s hanging on your walls or pictures of your kids..sorry. It’s worth it to spend a bit of money to order seamless professional background paper, either from a photographic store or online. Purchase it in a nice neutral color that does not compete with your wardrobe.

Straight Eyes. I want you to think of your eyes as a compass. Wherever your eyes go, your audience’s eyes will follow. Your eyes need to look straight into the camera, so it appears on the other end that you are looking right at the other person.

Here are three things to avoid or look out for:

Being a Diva. Hollywood is filled with actors and actresses who think they are bigger than they really are. Be your best self.

Shadows. This is not time for Phantom of the Opera. Using the right lighting will remove the shadows on your face.

Shiny faces. Be sure to clean your face. Adding appropriate makeup can also make your face come alive on camera.
