Learning professionals must demonstrate strong consulting skills to successfully guide their organizations toward optimal performance. But what are those skills? I recently spoke with Halelly Azulay, who facilitates ATD’s Consulting Skills Certificate, for some insight.
Halelly is a consultant, facilitator, speaker, and author with 20 years of professional experience in the fields of workplace learning. She also is the president of TalentGrow LLC, a consulting company focused on developing leaders and teams to improve the human side of work.
Halelly explains that the two-day certificate program is good for both internal and external consultants. It presents a five-step consulting model that participants can use going forward, covering everything from building relationships, to asking the right questions, to using key tools to analyze data. “There are many mistakes that are easy to make when you don’t have a solid foundation in terms of a process to use reliably,” she says.
What’s more, the program uses a case study format to help participants practice using the consulting model. For instance, every time a new piece of the consulting model process is reviewed in the course, participants apply it to the case study. “People really get a sense of how to do it. They experience it actively. And that really helps solidify the learning,” says Halelly.
