Use new technologies in training—but use them intentionally and responsibly.

Learning technology consultant Destery Hildenbrand’s interactive augmented-reality session at ATD25, “Crack the Code: Gamified Learning With Augmented and Mixed Reality,” enabled attendees to experiment with different types of immersive technology, while learning how to take a gamified approach with their training programs.
Gamification enables trainers to take participants on a fun and engaging learning path in an immersive environment. Hildenbrand broke down the four types of immersive technology: augmented reality (AR); mixed reality (MR); virtual reality (VR), and 360 immersive media.
However, while each represents new and exciting possibilities for trainers, everyone involved faces a learning curve.
“Like anything that we do in learning development, it has to be built with a purpose. There has to be something there,” Hildenbrand said. “But the challenges that we’ve faced with some of these newer technologies are that we start using the technology without actually thinking about how to use the technology best.”
One of the new technology pieces Hildenbrand discussed was Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which are smart glasses with artificial-intelligence features that enable users to take photos, listen to music, and livestream hands-free.
“I can’t even explain to you how cool that is and how amazing that is. And, actually, kind of how terrifying it is,” he said.
Hildenbrand also gave attendees 10 minutes to explore different AR environments provided by Metropolitan Community College Culinary Arts School in Omaha, Nebraska, using a QR code.
AR and other types of immersive reality aren’t simply plug-and-play type tools. Trainers must know what problems they’re trying to solve rather than replicating the same elements in newer tools. Diligently plan immersive technology training to maximize the tool’s effectiveness. That ensures that the technology “enhances. It does not take over,” Hildenbrand explained.
Read more about these technologies in Hildenbrand’s TD at Work guide, “Bring Training to Life With Virtual Reality.”
