At the center of this success is a commitment to parity between in-person and online learning. Top-ranked MBA programs focus on intentional program design, building learning modules internally from the ground up. The result is an online education that resembles the in-person experience, delivered virtually to minimize disruptions in a student’s professional and personal life.

“When we decided to launch an Online MBA program, we knew we had to focus on creating a program with a unique audience in mind. We methodically planned, developed, and designed each course to guarantee that students would have the same learning outcomes compared to students who were learning in a traditional classroom setting,” said Susan Brown, Director of Executive, Professional and Online MBA Programs at a southeast business school. “We also knew we needed to find ways to help these students feel connected to our MBA community. Having students work together in teams, offering live office hours with faculty, and having regularly scheduled town hall meetings guaranteed that students had the opportunity to engage with their program on a regular basis. With a 98% retention rate from our first cohort, we knew we had created something special.”

For prospective students, retention rate should serve as a key indicator of an online program’s commitment to the student experience. Experiential learning is another key consideration. Domestic and international residencies provide online students opportunities to immerse themselves in a new culture and business environment. Students can immediately apply these lessons to their own careers while deepening relationships with their peers. After all, relationships formed within cohorts are among the most valuable aspects of completing an MBA program.

Justin Z. Bridges, a 20-year veteran of the financial industry and recent Online MBA graduate, echoed this sentiment. “The reason I chose my program is simple: its unwavering standard of excellence. I wasn’t going to settle for anything less, and after my cohort interviews, I knew this was the only MBA program for me,” he said, “But the real magic lies in why I stayed. We built a culture that’s rare—a true community between our faculty and cohort members that inspires, challenges, and prepares us to thrive in the real world. It’s like capturing lightning in a bottle—artfully done and nearly impossible to replicate.”

This kind of culture doesn’t happen by accident. It requires an institutional commitment to ensuring online students have the same networking opportunities offered to on-campus students—live events, guest speakers, employer engagement, business visits, and even in-person meetups. A culture focused on connection and support ensures students can find success in the program and beyond.

Ultimately, prospective students must keep in mind that not all programs are created equally. First, these students should focus on what they need to learn, why they need to learn it, and which kind of program will help them reach their specific goals. Then, by researching programs with a rigorous curriculum, strong student retention, immersive learning, and an institutional commitment to the online experience, ambitious professionals can find a flexible path to the next chapter of their careers.
