The Partnership for Public Service has announced 32 federal employees as finalists for the 2016 Service to America Medal (also called the Sammies) awards as part of Public Service Recognition Week. The awards are designed to honor outstanding federal employees engaged in important work to spur the economy, protect the environment and advance the health, safety, and well-being of Americans—work and accomplishments that often go unnoticed.

The partnership selects one winner in each category: Federal Employee of the Year, Career Achievement, Call to Service, Citizen Services, Homeland Security and Law Enforcement, Management Excellence, National Security and International Affairs, and Science and Environment. The finalists’ achievements include:

  • tapping into citizen knowledge and expertise to solve pressing national problems by promoting the use of crowdsourcing, challenges and prizes across government

  • overhauling an SBA program that now generates $6 billion in private investments annually to build businesses, create jobs and stimulate the economy at no cost to the federal government

  • making immigration resources more accessible and user-friendly, including a cutting-edge online tool that can answer 90 percent of questions posed by those seeking U.S. citizenship or residency.

The Service to America Medal recipients will be chosen by a committee that includes leaders from government, academia, the private sector, the media, and the philanthropic community. National sponsors for the 2016 Service to America Medals are Microsoft, The Boston Consulting Group, Conant Leadership, Deloitte, ForeSee, and McKinsey & Company.

The Partnership for Public Service will announce this year’s winners of the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals at a black-tie gala in the fall. A list of the 32 Service to America Medal finalists and their accomplishments can be found at servicetoamericamedals.org.
