Quality implementation of talent development initiatives is essential to organizations who value their investment in human capital. By using the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide published by the Project Management Institute (PMI), talent development projects can be more effective and efficient.
The PMBOK Guide provides an excellent framework to enable short-term planning and support long-term strategic objectives. It looks at projects from the initiation through closure with respect to key domains and knowledge areas, such as cost, time, scope, being performed throughout the project life cycle.
There are several specific talent development initiatives that using this approach be helpful, including:
onboarding and new hire orientation programs
competency development of technical or behavioral skills
coaching and mentoring events
individual or team performance evaluations
job transfers or relocation
off-boarding and succession plans
training and experiential learning activities
documenting and recording compliance.
Looking at each initiative as a project with specific deliverables enables an organization to more effectively measure and monitor their progress towards goals. As the saying goes: "If it is worth doing, it is worth measuring." Remember: It's not just about training people, it's about verifying the level of learning that has been applied to the job and the payback the organization has been realized.
To learn more about this topic, the International Institute for Learning (IIL.com) is hosting a free one-hour webinar, Project Management of Talent Development Initiatives, on Friday, August 15, 2014, at 8:00 a.m. EST .You can register at IIL.com.
