We catch up with Jann Freed, author of Leading With Wisdom, which will be released by ASTD Press in August. Please provide a brief summary of your author chat at the ASTD 2013 conference bookstore.

  • Jann: I am going to talk about the journey of writing the book. I call this my Eat, Pray, Love book for leadership.

How is your perspective on this topic different from what else is out there?

  • Jann: This book is based on more than 100 interviews with thought leaders and their life experiences. I have synthesized their thoughts, writings, and advice into themes with examples.

What should people know about you?

  • Jann: I was in higher education for 30 years. This is my fifth book, but a book targeted to HR practitioners and learning professionals. I am also a leadership development and change management consultant with the Genysys Group.

What was the hardest part about writing a book?

  • Jann: For me, it was stopping the interviews to actually write the book. It was also hard to find my own voice after being in higher education for 30 years and trained to write in academic speak.

What was the most rewarding part?

  • Jann: The most rewarding part was how much I learned in the process of writing this book. It was a journey that began on sabbatical in 2004. Then it was rewarding finding ASTD as a publisher. I am honored.

What is your favorite ASTD or business book? Why?

  • Jann: It depends so much on what aspect of business I want to learn more about. Some of my favorite authors are some of the sages I interviewed: Margaret Wheatley, Peter Block, Parker Palmer, and Richard Leider.
