The Importance of Leader Development Programs Focused on EQ
You should consider several methods when designing a leader development program focused on EQ.

By definition, leadership is all about relationships. One of my favorite definitions of leadership comes from Leadership Theory and Practice (2013). Peter Northouse states leadership is “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.” At the heart of influence, relationships, and interpersonal connections is emotional intelligence (EQ).
How might your organization improve if your leaders were stronger in EQ?
The Basics of EQ
Just like leadership, there are several models and definitions of EQ. In The EQ Leader (2017), Steven Stein summarizes three components of the leading emotional intelligence models. These components include the ability to identify and manage emotional information in conjunction with the ability to focus one’s emotional energy. Central to EQ is also the ability to understand one’s internal emotions and the ability to understand the emotions of others external to us.
When you explain the value of EQ to leaders, what message do you share?
Leader Readiness for EQ
As with any learning experience, facilitators and learners hold different responsibilities. The learner is responsible for acquiring and engaging with the content and materials. Leader development programs that focus on and integrate EQ are no different!
Malcolm Knowles developed an adult learning theory called andragogy (another of my favorites). In short, andragogy holds that adult learners are autonomous, draw from experiences, are ready to learn topics that interest them, are focused on application, are motivated internally, and need to know the “why” of the learning experience.
Readiness and self-awareness are foundational building blocks for EQ development. EQ is personal and at the heart of how humans interact and perceive themselves and others.
How might you integrate a readiness screening into your leader development programs that focus on EQ?
EQ Skills for Leaders
Leaders with strong EQ can empower others throughout the organization, practice and model resilience, make people-centered decisions, and convey authenticity.
Here are some specific skills that are critical to include in leader development programs focused on EQ:
To emphasize the importance of leaders empowering others, integrate skills around how to coach, how to delegate, and how to foster inclusion.
To emphasize the importance of leaders modeling resilience, integrate skills around how to regulate one’s emotions, how to maintain a growth mindset, and how to manage stress.
To emphasize the importance of leaders making people-centered decisions, integrate skills around how to gather diverse perspectives, how to practice active listening, and how to use models for decision making.
To emphasize the importance of leaders conveying authenticity, integrate skills around how to align values with decisions, how to be transparent in communication, and how to enhance credibility through consistent communication.

How to Develop EQ in Leaders
You should consider several methods when designing a leader development program focused on EQ. A critical piece, especially for this topic, is allowing folks time to invest in self-reflection and self-discovery.
A helpful asynchronous learning activity is journaling exercises based on provided prompts.
Consider integrating role-playing, simulations, and scenario-based exercises for dynamic group interactions.
Another element essential to real growth with EQ is one-to-one confidential coaching with a trusted partner. Significant growth comes from vulnerability and conversations where folks are not worried about organizational politics or concerns around office gossip.
Of course, we cannot overlook the importance of a curriculum and content focused on application and improving behaviors, decisions, and outcomes.
The lasting impact of a leader development program focused on EQ is undoubtedly ensuring that the organizational culture consistently practices empathy, open communication, active listening, and psychological safety.
Ready for Leaders With Stronger EQ?
EQ is becoming more critical than ever amid ongoing change and transitions. Consider whether your internal team has the capacity to design and deliver a leader development program focused on EQ or whether it makes more sense to work with a trusted partner to provide a meaningful and effective learning experience.
