By definition, leadership is all about relationships. One of my favorite definitions of leadership comes from Leadership Theory and Practice (2013). Peter Northouse states leadership is “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.” At the heart of influence, relationships, and interpersonal connections is emotional intelligence (EQ).

Just like leadership, there are several models and definitions of EQ. In The EQ Leader (2017), Steven Stein summarizes three components of the leading emotional intelligence models. These components include the ability to identify and manage emotional information in conjunction with the ability to focus one’s emotional energy. Central to EQ is also the ability to understand one’s internal emotions and the ability to understand the emotions of others external to us.

Malcolm Knowles developed an adult learning theory called andragogy (another of my favorites). In short, andragogy holds that adult learners are autonomous, draw from experiences, are ready to learn topics that interest them, are focused on application, are motivated internally, and need to know the “why” of the learning experience.
