Encouragingly, TD professionals and learners share a common understanding of learning culture. ATD Research asked both groups whether they agree or disagree with various statements about their organization’s learning culture. Overall, both tend to agree that their organizations provide a safe environment for open communication, that learning is a way of life at their organizations, and that managers support learning. This alignment is important because it indicates shared expectations and experiences.

However, organizations face various challenges to establish a culture of learning, including not having enough time for employee learning and lacking resources to support a culture of learning. Despite these challenges, the demand for learning remains high. Sixty-six percent of learners say they want more time to participate in training, and 67 percent say they want more opportunities for training.

To combat these challenges, TD professionals can expand informal learning and on-the-job learning opportunities. Informal learning opportunities create spaces for individuals to exchange knowledge and share their experiences with others, while on-the-job learning gives learners a chance to receive focused guidance and feedback from their managers, mentors, and peers. Today, the most popular informal learning opportunity offered to learners is lunch & learns, while the most popular on-the-job learning opportunity offered is mentorship programs.
