Workers share the outlook that upskilling is necessary for competing in the future of work.

Workers may have conflicting attitudes about the threat that emerging technology, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) poses to their jobs, but they have similar views about the need to upskill to compete in the future workplace. For instance, 37 percent of those polled by learning platform edX admit they lack proficiency in at least one new skill. Unfortunately, although several recent studies reveal that workers want more development to gain new skills and knowledge, they have little confidence that companies and higher education are prepared to deliver the education, training, and support they need to succeed.
