Historically, human resources (HR) primarily focused on maximizing productivity, while learning and development (L&D) improved performance that shaped organizational behavior, all for the purposes of optimizing employee effectiveness and bottom line. With technology automating many of the functions of the past, the roles of both HR and L&D professionals continually evolve from transactional to consultative business partner in nature, often blurring the lines between these two functions and their vertical locations within the businesses served. Both roles need three key skills to succeed.
