As trainers, we tend to be “people” people. We want to please others, say “yes” when we can, and create learning experiences that solve problems and are beneficial for the participants. We also deal with deadlines, which are often tight and at times feel (or maybe really are) impossible. Sometimes deadlines truly are arbitrary, and there is flexibility to extend the deadline to ensure a quality product. Other times, however, a deadline is driven by external requirements, and training must be delivered by a certain date no matter what. If you’ve ever found yourself in the latter position, I’d like to offer several pieces of advice that have proven helpful for me over the years. Although I’m writing this primarily with e-learning projects in mind, much of this advice applies to instructor-led training development, as well.
