As learning and development professionals, we interact daily with learners’ complex social and emotional needs. For some learners—especially those accustomed to the in-person support of a skilled facilitator who observes and responds to nonverbal communication, prompts reflection, and encourages positive social interactions—the online learning experience can feel like it does not adequately meet their needs. To complicate this further, the process of adapting to new technologies and systems can make the experience of online learning feel impersonal and isolating.
