With summer here, many young folks will be looking for a job. Emphasis on “many Studies have shown that this summer will see the largest teenage workforce in 15 years, which could help the leisure and hospitality industries which the labor shortage has negatively impacted. That said, there are some considerations to make when hiring teenagers. For one, compensation needs to be adjusted. Since the start of 2021, wages for 16 to 24-year-olds have been growing twice as fast as the wages for other demographics. Those looking to attract teenage workers will need to exceed these expectations to remain competitive. Courting these workers is difficult because teenage employment has been declining since 2000. Back in the late 1970s, more than half of American teenagers were employed. Now, that figure hovers around one quarter.
