Better Helping Your Employees Develop

One of the best ways to realize organizational goals is to help employees reach theirs. Every employee has some sort of plan for their career, and if you can demonstrate how you’ll help them get there, they’ll be far more likely to be engaged and far less likely to leave. To accomplish this, it’s important to understand their aspirations. When is the last time you’ve spoken with your team about what they want out of their careers? Where they hope to be in five years? “Create a space where employees can imagine what their careers will look like in five to 10 years, ask the question, and then be quiet,” says Rhavonn Richardson of Think and Ink Grant Consulting. “Now, it’s your turn to listen and identify mutually beneficial solutions that will advance the business and meet their career goals.” This can’t just be lip service, though. Employers need to put their money where their mouths are in employee development. Offer training courses, pay for certifications, or help them gain the skills they need to achieve their goals. Sure, you run the risk of having them accept a better position once they’re better trained, but they were more likely to leave if you didn’t show any interest in their development.
