Breaking Up the Monotony of Remote Meetings

Let’s face it: They’re necessary, but no one really likes meetings. And that sentiment has grown as we’ve collectively transitioned from traditional meeting rooms to our home offices. Without consideration, remote meetings will be tedious and border on mind-numbing. To reinvigorate virtual meetings, it can help to think of the problem like you would any that requires an innovative solution. First, clearly identify what you want to change. It could help to use, “It would be great if we could . . . ” as a starting point. Then, identify what stumbling blocks there are to accomplishing that goal. Be specific here. Instead of saying, “We want more engaging meetings, but we get bored,” say, “It would be great if we could have more lively discussion and collaboration, but when we multitask as a group, our minds tend to wander.” Consider your statements and consider the action you need to take. It can help to appoint a single person every meeting to encourage desired behavior or overcome an identified blocker. This could take the form of a devil’s advocate to poke holes in things or someone who can nudge people away from monopolizing the conversation.
