The way we work is evolving, and smart business leaders are adapting to the changes. The pandemic has taught us that remote work is a viable option for most organizations, and asynchronous, decentralized workplaces are becoming the norm. However, if employers are insisting that employees return to a physical workspace, they need to rethink what that space will look like. And first and foremost, those decisions need to be informed by employee needs. Nena Martin, global technology leader and director of workplace for the design and architecture firm Gensler, says her organization has been soliciting feedback to better understand what’s driving their workers. “It’s really about assessing what the company’s culture needs, and then putting that to the design test ... They’ve started by creating different types of spaces in their offices to see which is most conducive to engagement and productivity. They’ve been asking for feedback, too, from employees in different departments … There’s a QR code, so you get real-time feedback on how \[the space is\] working \[and can\] see what’s going to work and what’s not going to work,” Martin says.
