The global health crisis threw quite a few industries for a loop, and as the pandemic subsides, one lasting effect will be an upheaval in the labor market. Companies are attracting top talent and differentiating themselves from their peers by highlighting their learning and development programs. Huge names like Amazon, AT&T, Pixar, and Etsy have recognized the power of fostering learning cultures and are understanding how these efforts lead to organizational success. Despite these companies’ different missions, there are important lessons to be learned in building meaningful employee learning and development programs. First, it’s important to use the right platform. Online training cuts down on overhead and its on-demand nature means it’s more easily accessible than traditional classroom learning. Digital training also makes it possible to offer microlearning—where lessons are chopped up into smaller, bite-sized bits so learners are more likely to engage with the content. Finally, it’s important to provide social learning opportunities to inspire collaboration and a deeper level of retention.
