As labor demands continue to shift on both the supply and demand side, many organizations—particularly those in the technology sector—are rethinking qualifications, specifically whether college degrees should be required for most positions. In April, Indeed surveyed 402 employers across the US to better understand how their hiring plans are changing. The majority revealed they are moving toward more flexible models. Of the respondents, 59 percent of employers said they were considering eliminating college degree requirements for hiring, 30 percent of employers said that such a move would help them hire more diverse talent, and a whopping 87 percent of senior executives said they aren’t prepared to address future skills gaps. For context, only about 33 percent of the US adult population has a college education, placing huge constraints on the qualified labor pool. “Gone are the days of unnecessary credentials and aspirational job requirements. Instead, we find employers thinking creatively to consider different types of applicants than in the past—a shift that can benefit everyone,” the Indeed report states.
