Communicating Effectively With Gen Z Employees

If you have a multigenerational workforce, you understand that some communication styles work with certain cohorts better than others. You also know that adapting communication strategies to engage with Gen Z employees—those born between 1997 and 2012—who are now entering the workforce can be challenging. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z prioritizes career growth and development over job stability, seeking clear paths for progression and milestones similar to their experiences in education. Managers must understand this mindset and have effective career conversations with Gen Z employees to ensure they remain engaged and productive. Managers often face the challenge of Gen Z employees seeking a predefined career path, akin to following a GPS with set routes and destinations. However, in today’s workplace, career development is more like orienteering, with employees taking the lead in deciding their direction and making adjustments as they progress. To better communicate with Gen Z employees, start by understanding their desires and emotions, helping them concentrate on their current situation and career aspirations. Encourage reflection by asking them about their preferred skills, activities, values, work environment, and colleagues. It also helps to create directional clarity. Help employees identify their ambitions and what success looks like for them, aligning personal values with career goals. Promoting a change of perspective can also be meaningful. Encourage employees to explore opportunities beyond their comfort zone, both within their current role and elsewhere in the organization. And always make sure to end with action. Ensure that career conversations lead to actionable steps for career development and progress.
